PAX 2010 Dead Rising 2 Capcom Event Greene's Hardware

CAPCOM DEAD RISING 2 PAX PARTY - Zombie killing event, minus actual zombies!

Capcom rented out a studio space during the Penny Arcade Expo, and transformed it into 'Greene's Hardware' an event to promote the upcoming title, Dead Rising 2. Gamers were treated to demo kiosks, and free pizza and soda, but the highlight of the night was the selection of 'hardware' on hand for attendees to handle.

From hammers, and batons, to samurai swords, gamers celebrated the popular videogame with a real hands-on experience. Unfortunately, there were no zombies to slice and/or impale outside of the videogame.

Dead Rising 2 was developed by Vancouver-based studio Blue Castle Games, which Capcom has recently purchased. The expansion has been referred to Capcom Games Studio Vancouver.

Now you can only expect a flood of resumes being sent to the studio, with would-be employees hoping to work on some popular Capcom properties.

Albert Art Custom Holiday Toy2r Qee vinyl toy
Albert Art Custom Qees: Drinking Somber Santa and Elf.

Well, here it is, my last 2 custom toys of the year, and just in time for the Holidays. Last December I ended the year with the wonderfully difficult Bomberman custom Kidrobot munny, a toy which has since imploded on itself, unfortunately. This year I'm more in line with the season, working on the Toy2r platform, 2.5, and 8 inch Qee. The funny thing is I got the 2.5 Qee as a Christmas present last year, and only recently have decided to do something with it -- A quirky moody Santa, and a happy little Elf, a little too happy.

I made these hand-painted Christmas themed toys without even knowing Kidrobot had done something similar with their Holiday Munny, featuring accessories such as a bottle, and Santa hat. Having discovered that well along the production of my own custom toy, I was a bit bummed, but stuck with the bottle idea. I guess everyone thinks Christmas characters should have a bottle of liquor in hand. Who am I to disagree. And being I'm not too thrilled with what Toy2r released as their Holiday 2008, 8 inch Qee, I went ahead, and customized my own. What do you think? Hot or not?

>

The colors on both the Santa, and Elf, were inspired by ketchup believe it or not, darker than the usual red and green seen on your average holiday characters. I think it was Heinz that released a green and darker red ketchup. Mixing the paints to get the right color took some time, but I like how it ended up.

The blue highlight hair was something I carried over from the Halloween toys I did.

The chocolate liquor bottles were a bitch to find. I literally searched all over Vancouver to find them, and in the end I didn't find them, a friend had found them for me. I searched all sorts of souvenir shops, even drove to the airport to scope out the stores, but in the end it was at London Drugs, a place I completely overlooked.

The Rug, I got off ebay shipped from Ontario. The Santa hat (not pictured), I got from Zellers, and the tree from Canadian Tire. I definitely go all out to find the right items to add to the custom toy. That's the fun of customizing!

Too bad these are one-of-a-kind toys, and not mass produced. I'd love to give them as gifts, but alas I'm holding on to them. But that doesn't mean you can't see these toys up close.

These toys will be featured this Saturday December 20th at the Artist Perspective group art show 'Seeing is Believing' at The Sweatshop here in Vancouver, along with a few other of the customs I've done in the past, like Bonk, and Mutant Monkey. In addition to that, I'll have some wicked paintings to accompany the holiday toys.

Start Time: Saturday, December 20, 2008 at 7:00pm End Time: Sunday, December 21, 2008 at 3:00am

Location: The Sweatshop Street: 1945 East Hastings City/Town: Vancouver, BC

This is a show you don't want to miss, not only because of my toys, but because of the other artists in attendance, DJ's, and overall party atmosphere. I will be posting pictures form the event, so be sure to check back.

JOIN the facebook group to RSVP. Come by and say hi this Saturday!

I'm also focusing more on maintaining my myspace page myspace.com/albertart. It's a great way to stay connected to other artists. Add me up!

2008 was a ridiculous year for me. Life changing in fact since losing my brother back in June. The Holiday's will never really be the same for my family and I after that. I'd always bounce ideas off him, and he'd give me his honest opinion and some creative feedback to get me all excited and enthusiastic about whatever it was I working on at the time. Now my big bro is gone. I guess I'll really have to drink my sorrows away this Christmas, like the Qee.

2009 I hope to continue making quirky characters, and to showcase them in different venues. (I'd love to show my toys outside Vancouver one day.) Hope you can keep tuning in to find out what happens with this artist!

Happy Holidays!

****Update!!! Check out the the pictures and video I took at the Artist Perspective art show.

Bid on this - rez2cool's ebay items.

Get your Holiday gifts on ebay.

Well, it's getting close to Christmas, only 4 weeks, and a few days away!!!

In the spirit of giving, I've recently booted up my ebay seller account, giving up some of my unwanted items to the powers of the online auction block and giving you all a chance to get your hands on some cool stuff. Because like everyone else out there, I have stuff I don't need, and would like to relieve my otherwise cluttered up my space... for a price.

Some stuff I got in Japan with the intention of hawking them on ebay -- like toys, and TGS swag -- Other stuff like PSP and 360 games I'm trying to get rid of, all in excellent, 'like new' condition, because I hardly played them.

Here are some of the stuff I have listed, with more to come in the next few days. Check out the full list on my ebay page. Paypal please.

Neon Genesis Evangelion UCC Coffee beverage. I've already sold one, and I have 3 more left. Surprisingly hardcore fans would pay anything to get their hands on this to drink it, or to keep it preserved. I purchased them at the Big Wheel Odaiba arcade. This one pictured is the only one different design, the others were all duplicates.

Chun Li Street Fighter IV Pins, which I got from TGS. Straight from the Street Fighter IV competition. I have several of these I'll be posting separately.

Street Fighter IV Pins Ryu and Akuma from TGS.

Naruto Blind-box Toy mini-figure originally purchased in Tokyo.

UNICLO UT Gundam Tee Small purchased in Harajuku. Sorry only small size, it was literally the last one in the store. Comes with the capsule. Shipping might be a little more than usual because of the packaging dimensions.

Phantasy Star Universe Game + Strategy Guide BradyGames. Not a fan of the game, hardly played it.

SSX On Tour Sony PSP, old game, hardly played like new. Also check out my Tony Hawk, Prince of Persia, and Need for Speed PSP listed.

Tales of Symphonia blind-box toy mini-figure from Japan.

Star Wars blind-box toy mini-figure from Japan.

Biohazard 5 Bandanna from TGS, just added!!!

If there's any questions, let me know. Bid now, so I can ship it out before the holiday mailing craze gets too crazy.

Rez2cool enters the Gears of War 2 Arena
Gears! Gears! Gears!

I spent my Friday night getting reacquainted with the badasses of Gears of War, Marcus, Dom, and the horde of locusts burrowing in the planets core. In a only few hours I've made it to Act 3 on Solo-Campaign normal difficulty, and as the end soon approaches, the fun really has only begun. The Multi-player remains a highlight of Gears, and I've made it to Wave 15 with my band of fellow online players, in Horde mode.

I picked up my copy from EB, having pre-ordered the limited edition one weeks before, thinking that I'd get one of those replica CoG tags. Too lazy to do the midnight launch bullshit, I decided to get it on Friday afternoon. All they gave me was a lousy poster. What's the point of pre-ordering if it doesn't come with the swag?

My impressions of the campaign game will spoil the experience for anyone who hasn't picked up gears yet. All I gotta say is Act 2 of the game had me confused on the direction the developers were taking Gears... I'll save that for a later post.

In the mean time, my facebook status reads "Albert is BUSY Gears of War 2ing w/360 Elite... Don't bother contacting me. Unless you wanna join the fight."

Albert Art Custom Bax Bear Vinyl Toy Halloween 2008

Happy Halloween!

New art from AlbertArt.net

Finally I'm able to present to you all my latest custom vinyl toys, fresh out of my ghetto workshop (aka my apartment), and just in time for Halloween too.

I haven't made a custom since my brother passed away back in June of this year, so I'm definitely ready to get back into it, and to make more toys before the year is up.

I finished these toys in just under two weeks. I started working on them a couple of days after I got back from my trip to Tokyo. Inspired, and ready to get creative on some customs, I had brought back a bunch of toys with me but the problem was I already had toys piling up sitting around at home. So I decided to work on those older DIY toys gathering dust to make space for the new stuff I picked up in Japan. More on that at a later time.

First things first, which toy was being neglected the longest?

Despite how uninspired, and boring the Bax Bear toy is, I just had to do something with them. Does anyone even remember Bax Bear? I bought a pair of these DIY toys a long time ago, and didn't really know what to do with them. The odd placement of the nose, and the shape of the head really annoy me and I think it limits what can be done with the toy. These toys have been criticized by artists as being Toy2r Qee bastardized ripoffs, and I can't blame people for thinking that way. They kinda are. Though, a canvas is a canvas, and a toy is a toy, making even the shittiest DIY toy look good, that's the job of the artist right?!

So I went ahead with customizing these, with the Halloween theme in mind. I didn't want to do your average classic Halloween character in vinyl toy form. No Dracula, Werewolf, or Frankenstein Monster for me. I wanted to make something new, and kinda bloody.

I sketched out several ideas, but I kept coming back to the first one I drew. From there I did a mock up painting with canvas and acrylic paint, to get the mood of the toys.

"Buck Bear meets The Surgeon," custom Bax Bear vinyl toy.

In comes 'The Surgeon'. A sadistic, cannibalistic bear who's handy with tools (Chainsaw and Hammer), but can't really see straight because his hair flops down over his eyes. On his back is a modified Medical Field symbol, made demonic to fit the toys evil nature.

His victim the cowardly bucktoothed 'Buck Bear', yells for help.

Hand-painted, with the Surgeons accessories found at a flea market, I also used some super sculpey in the handles of the hammer and chainsaw to add some thickness, so that they would fit the hands snuggly. Together these toys stand atop an 8x8 wood stage I painted.

These toys including this painting are for sale, and can be seen up close and on display at the Artist Perspective Art Show in November here in Vancouver, of which I am a featured artist. Details about the show will be posted, as the plans get finalized. Be sure to check back often.

I also contributed some stickynote Halloween art to the Stickynote-theatre. Using Japanese stationery I picked up on my trip, these stickynotes are oddly shaped, but still cool. Hope you like the art!

Albert Art Space Monkey Custom Munny toy

Albert Art Custom MUNNY Mutant Monkey From Space! Vinyl Toy

MUNNY Made while Mourning If you haven't noticed by now, I haven't updated this site for quite some time. I've been slacking on the updates with good reason, not because I don't have anything to post, but because of recent events that have temporarily put a stop to the blogging. On June the 18th 2008, my brother suddenly passed away. It was the darkest, most uncertain day in my life, as I had lost my big brother in a situation that could have been prevented, which until now still feels very unreal. I still can't believe he's gone, and I'm writing about my brother under these circumstances.
For the past two weeks I was out of town mourning with family, and friends. The support of a large extended family was invaluable and needed in this time of tragedy. It came as a complete shock to everyone who knew him. How could someone so healthy and full of life just leave this world so abruptly?
I was in the middle of painting my Kidrobot custom MUNNY for the "Show Us Your MUNNY Vol.2" toy show with deadline looming, when I received a call from my sister, who got a call from my dad regarding my brother who collapsed while training for a marathon. Amid all the chaos, and confusion of that day I pushed on to finish the toy within a few hours all the while keeping my brother in mind. It was very difficult to concentrate on producing quality work knowing that my brother had just died, I wish I had more time to work on the custom toy titled "Mutant Monkey!" but I had to make due with the time I had left before I flew out of town.
My brother who was only 28 years old, left this world with a positive impression on those who knew him. His friends, coworkers, and loved ones remember him as a well mannered, hardworking, young man with an interest in taking care of others rather than himself. He supported numerous charities, volunteered his time and energy to helping others, and genuinely cared about the environment. He had a knack for political discussion, business, technology and the latest gadgets from videogames to Skype phone, to iphone. He loved good food, friends, and fun times.
He was a competitive person in everything he did (hence his participation in Marathons, and extreme training). He pushed himself a lot whether at work or at play. My brother and I would always get fired up when playing videogames, most notably Virtua Fighter (1, 2, 3, 3tb, 4, 4 evo, and 5). A week or so before his untimely passing he sent me a link to "Virtua Fighter 5 R" on youtube. We were both excited for this upcoming version of Sega's fighting game series. We were even planning a trip to Tokyo for the Tokyo Game Show. Though we would fight in games, he'd always share his strategies, give me tips and advice, so that I would improve as a player to take on the competition, as a big brother should. Not only have I lost my big brother, but I've lost my sparring partner as well. I'll never look at Virtua Fighter, or videogames in general the same way again without thinking of him.
Yes, videogames were a huge part of his life, ever since he got his first NES back in the 80's. When he wasn't working, studying, or training, he would be buying, collecting, or playing videogames. His games collection consists of mainly Sega, Nintendo, 360, PSP, and Atari Jaguar stuff including rare Japanese import titles for each of these systems (excluding the Jaguar and 360). He was an adopter of early online gaming on his Sega Saturn, and later on his Sega Dreamcast. He really got into the experience, getting all the peripherals (keyboard, mouse, VGA adapters, broadband adapter, twin arcade sticks, etc.) for the ideal online/network experience on the home console. He was really into the Atari Jaguar as well and purchased many games, including those for the Jaguar CD. He purposely skipped out on the Sony PS1, and PS2, generation because he felt that his current consoles and PC were enough and offered more of a multiplayer/online experience which was important to him since his siblings (my sister and I moved away) several years ago. He later gave in to Microsoft and their 360 rather than to Sony, after the Dreamcast had faded away.
His massive gaming collection, is topped off by his DVD collection, which together can fill up a corner in a store like Blockbuster Video. While family members were telling me to sell his stuff for money, I felt it was necessary to keep everything he's collected either to use, or preserve. He would want me and my sister to keep the collection he worked so hard to earn in his short life. A gamer's collection should be passed on, and I've inherited quite the collection of stuff.
My brother was also a big influence in my choice to go into animation as a career. We used to always joke about making our own videogame when we were younger with me being the lead artist/animator, my sister the programmer, and my brother the mastermind producer. He definitely helped fuel my imagination, and interest in videogames, animation, and even hip hop music. He is also the reason that I started blogging. He introduced me to 1UP.com back in 2005 where I first started blogging. His online alias "Ryo Hazuki", from the hero of the same name from the game "Shenmue", and "idorkas", a play on Apples "iphone/pod", and character from "Virtua On", became titles to both his blogs http://ryohazuki.1up.com, and http://idorkas.blogspot.com
I will definitely miss my bro. Though he is physically gone, he was such a big part of my life and the lives of others that everything we do reminds us of him.

Making of Mutant Monkey from Space!
For the show I decided to go with a character design that for once wasn't based on a videogame. I promised I'd do an original design, so with "Mutant Monkey!" or "Mutant Monkey from Space!" I wanted to go for a character with an extreme expression, attitude and with a style that lends itself to animation. The character is cartoony, with a pretty basic color scheme. The Gun prop, and can were included accessories in this MUNNY series.
After I got the toy to a point where I could say it was finished, I dropped it off at Voltage so they could get it ready for the toy show on June 26th. I unfortunately was unable to attend the show because I was in LA for the funeral, but I hear it was quite the party.

I think this is my 5th custom toy, so by now I'd like to think have the process down to a T. Using Super Sculpey for the Feet, and Shackle I boiled it to cure it, then painted it. The entire figure was painted with acrylic paint. The stage I created using an 8x8 wood panel which I primed, then painted.
I made this MUNNY with an adjustable tail in mind. I drilled a hole in the tail part of the MUNNY, then inserted a wire which I had molded and cured super sculpey to. The tail can be rotated and posed, but NOT bended.

Personally I think the toy looks good for a rush job. I just wish my brother were around to see the finished product.

This toy is listed for sale on voltageland.
