They join Letterman the Hound, as they stir up trouble around the neighbourhood and in the classroom.

Evil Toys Fall Gallery Custom Toy Art Show Vancouver

Ending the year, with another custom toy show!

The "Evil Toys" art show at The Fall Tattooing & Artists Gallery, went down Saturday night (DEC.5th) with a good turn out of art fans, curious to see what the talented group of artists had in store.

From MUNNYS to QEES, to original sculpted toys, and paintings, the show had a little bit of everything, ranging in styles, and complexity from local artists.

The organizers of the show, made sure to put the toys in protective displays, behind glass, making for excellent presentation of the work. I for one, was impressed with the display, knowing my toys were safe, away from the hands, dirt, and dust common when toys are 'exposed.' (My experiences with other art shows had the toys without any protective barrier.)

Overall, this was an excellent show. As an artist, working with the gallery was straightforward, and free of any issues. I'd recommend this place for any artists looking to promote their stuff. In the new year, I'd love to do more shows with The Fall Gallery.

Designer Trash Vinyl Toy Packaging
My MUNNY trash, collected over two years. on Twitpic

Packaging designer vinyl toys leaves a whole lot of trash.

I seemed to have amassed quite the collection of boxes for the DIY toys that I've purchased over the last few years, many of them Kidrobot MUNNY.

On the outside, the packaging seems like nothing special. They have a nice sturdy box, and are all nicely presented, and packaged, the accessories individually wrapped. Though I didn't realize the extent of the packaging until I started actually disposing of the boxes.

MUNNY = excess packaging on Twitpic

The amount of trash from one MUNNY is pretty bad, to say the least. Contained within the box, you have the bag that holds all the accessories, and each accessory has it's own wrapping, a soft or hard clear plastic. Leaving you with a toy, but a whole lot of crap to go with it.

Other toys I've purchased include Large Smorkin' Labbit, small Smorkin' Labbit, Toy2r Qee, Mutan, Pusher, and Touma, and with the exception of the small Smorkin' Labbit, and Mutan, those other toys don't have accessories. At least, they don't have them wrapped individually. Rather they're contained within the clear plastic mold, that holds the toy together when shipped.

MUNNY seems to be excessive in the packaging, but other toys have their own plastic waste issues too. And typically there's no SPI code on the plastic packaging to indicate if it's recyclable or not.

I've always felt like it's great to have designer toys, and the packaging is cool, but it's a waste to even have all that wrapping in the first place. Sort of like videogame packaging, and all you really care for is that small disc, or cartridge of the game which is tiny compared to the package it was sold in. All the wrapping just gets in the way. More waste for the environment.

Shiny wrapping cool... But a bit much. More MUNNY trash. on Twitpic

Plastic trash just makes me think of all the particles floating in the ocean, as shown in Garbage Island by VBS.TV

Sure vinyl toy packaging is the extension of the artist, and the toy they've created, but I think the future of designer toys, should embrace new ways of packaging, new materials, and presentations of the toys, to make them truly unique, and conscious of waste. I have no space in my tiny place for boxes, so I toss all the packaging out, and leave the toys on the shelf.

As for vinyl toys themselves, I've heard that the majority of Polyvinyl chloride products can be recycled, but for the toys, I'm not too sure. I've never had to throw away a vinyl toy.

If Toy designers think they're all hip, trendy, and cool, then "Reduce, Reuse, Recycle" should be a philosophy that artists should be pimping!!!

Albert Art Custom Touma Bonga Konga Convex Mutan vinyl toy

Tokyo toys, Bonga Konga, Mutan, customized by Albert Art.

Touma's Bonga Konga!

I'm always on the look out for new and interesting vinyl toy platforms from local and international artists to customize. Some toys however don't have a DIY platform available for easy customization, but that doesn't stop me from seizing the opportunity to make something unique.

Case in point, Touma's Bonga Konga, which was given to me as a gift for the Holiday's sent directly from Tokyo from a friend, with the intention that I would customize the sucker. And so I did, as you can see, in the same theme as my Custom Smorkin' Labbit toy, I did earlier in the year.

The Bonga Konga itself originally had a very limited release I believe, around 500.

I had a lot of fun customizing this toy because of it's really exaggerated and cartoony shape. Hard to believe it can stand up on two feet, and it's poseable given it's heavy design! After customizing this toy, I seriously want to get my hands on another Bonga Konga to try another design on it. Overall, it's a very cool toy to work with.

Convex Astro Mutan!

Another platform that is not often seen in North America, is the Convex MUTAN toy from the cool folks at Secret Base in Harajuku. I picked up several of these during my Tokyo Trip, and will be customizing them throughout the year. This one does come in a DIY series, originally all black.

Both these toys were made for the "Into the Darkness" show happening in San Francisco June 5th at First Amendment Gallery @ 1000 Howard Street. OPENING AT 6PM!!!They will be on display along with my Custom Munny Ness.

Do these toys go with the theme of the show? Of course they do. I didn't want to go with the usual things that people think of, unlike your typical 'Darkness' like Halloween characters or something. The darkness in these toys isn't ghouls, ghosts, goblins, guts, or gore, but rather, it's all in the attitude.

If you're in San Francisco, definitely stop by the show. If you take pictures of my toys, add them to the facebook page, or send me a link so I can post them here!

Albert Art Recession Sale Art and Toys

Albert Art Recession Art painting and toys
Custom Munny for Jen from Vancouver, BC

New art
MUNNY
Unlike, other toy artists out there who come from a graffiti art, or tattoo design background, where elaborate line work on toys, is their forté, I prefer to stick to what I enjoy doing most, and that's coming up with characters that look like they could exist in the world of cartoony animation. I've never been one to provide intricate detailing on any art that I do, and I think my natural tendency as an artist when cartooning and sketching for toys is, simplicity.
With this character in particular, I was thinking of older cartoons, like Felix the Cat, and Mickey Mouse, and since I've never created a female character on a custom toy before, I figured now was a good time. I started out with a monkey-pirate character design in mind, but then as I progressed, the toy started looking more like a Mime, a circus clown, or some carnival girl. Up until now, I still don't know what it is, so I just called it "Misho" pronounced 'Mee-Sho', a play on Jen's online alias.
The toy was commissioned for my recession surprise art sale.

PAINTING
I did this painting of Princess Toadstool for another recession art commission. It's an acrylic painting on an 8x8 wood panel. I wanted to do a trippy mushroom kingdom, Alice in Wonderland motif.

Well excuuuuse me, Princess! You should try to lay off the shrooms.

Albert Art Earthbound Ness Custom Munny

I Am EarthBound- Albert Art Custom "NESS" vinyl toy
Albert Art Custom "NESS" vinyl toy.
A fresh take on a classic videogame character -- a kid with an attitude, and a love for sneakers inspired by Tokyo's urban culture.
When I was commissioned to do a Mother inspired painting for someone, I instantly thought of doing a custom toy. Ness was perfect for toy production. The EarthBound character is short, and stubby, but he needed an update, and needed to shed his 'goody-goody' persona.
For those unfamiliar with the cult Nintendo classic, EarthBound aka 'Mother', is an RPG set in a suburban North American town, with Ness the hero of the game who wields a baseball bat, and a Yo-Yo. When thinking about those elements, all these ideas for a badass Ness came flooding into my mind. Thus my interpretation of Ness, is one of contrast to the original. One that also embraces his Japanese roots, with modern footwear inspired by Tokyo-based Mad foot! shoes, which you can see more defined in the Ness painting. For the toy, I designed something simpler, rather than the high-tops.
This would be my fourth videogame-inspired custom Munny, after Bonk, Mega Man, and Bomberman.

For the commissioned painting, the client wanted to have the Kraken from the game featured with Ness. As you can see I made the sea creature more dominate in the image, with Ness taking up a very small portion (in the right bottom corner) of the space on the 8 x 8 wood panel.

The second painting was made solely as a concept for the toy. The arrows made similar to the Mad Foot! logo on their shoes. I used a combination of acrylic paint, markers, and spray paint.

To create the leg portion of the toy, I had to employ new tools. I purchased a Dremel power tool for cutting, drilling, and sanding, wood stubs which were used as legs. They were fused to shoes which I made with super sculpey.

Unlike the other toys I've made, Ness has his share of accessories, from an over-sized backpack to a baseball cap. In the end the toy is very cool, with a distinctive hip-hop urban personality. Signature Albert Art.
