Project Glass Google Glasses Gamers Nike Warby Parker

Project Glass, ideal for gamers.

One day, the gadgetry from the world of sci-fi will become a reality, and we're living in that time. With touch screen smartphones, tablet computers, self-driving cars and now the Qualcomm Tricorder X Prize contest a $10 million competition, bringing the Star Trek device into the real world. This is definitely an exciting time for new gadgets.

Yet the most exciting  gadget on the horizon is another from Google, Project Glass, Augmented Reality eyewear. This is most definitely not an April Fools joke. Still very early in development the technology would allow  for a HUD interface to appear on the users field of view, which would allow for integrating useful Google tools like Maps, and Google Hangouts, into your eyes without having to hold a phone, hands-free.

Most people seem to be excited for this technology but are equally divided as it could be a big distraction to many. Can you imagine all the stories of people walking into poles, getting hit by cars while crossing the street, getting into accidents while driving?

Then again, that wouldn't be anything new since many people are just as accident prone with their heads down staring at their smartphones in the streets on top of having music playing with their audio devices.

For the generation who play First-person videogames, or MMOs, we've become accustomed to having information displayed over our virtual worlds. And the majority of gamers have no problems with it.

If Google Glasses were to become a reality, the HUD design would need to be intuitive, elegant, and controllable. You wouldn't want icons popping up randomly that would get in the way of LIFE. You should be able to choose the information you want to see.

I don't think this would isolate people. People are already isolated when they prefer to stare at their phones texting, while listen to music without making eye contact with each other in the streets. At least with Project Glass you're looking up at and discovering the world around you.

Texting and walking into a fountain...

Whether the technology comes in the form of a projection attachment for use on regular spectacles or entirely new set of eyewear, remains to be seen. IF Google decides to team up with an eyewear company, might I suggest Warby Parker, or Nike? $95 frames from Warby Parker would appeal to the Hipsters, while Nike would appeal to those who play sports.

On one hand you have to convince people to adopt the technology, and another to convince them that they won't look stupid wearing them!

2011 Recap

A year of progress!

ART TOYS

2011 has been a fantastic year! My collaboration with Toy2R in the Skelanimals Qee Artist Series 2, marked my first ever production toy. A big step forward with the release of this custom toy, Letterman The Hound. This was also the catalyst for my frequent participation in local comic conventions, and art markets throughout the year. Met a bunch of great artists, who have become my table mates at various cons.

I have some new stuff coming up in the new year. I'm planning to do several more Vancouver Comic Cons. Stay tuned, stay safe, and thank you for your support. https://plus.google.com/b/106042054698715164922/

ANDROID

I decided to replace my old gen 1 iPhone with a Nexus S, the Google Samsung collaboration phone. So far it's been a great phone, doing everything that I need it to. The camera takes very nice pics, and Little Photo is my fave photo app. Check out my random pics on http://twitpic.com/photos/albertart

GOOGLE+

Google+ was an unexpected new social networking tool that I have been using quite heavily since it was in beta. The tool has some pretty nifty features that make the experience a bit like Twitter, and a bit like blogger, but very different from Facebook. I plan on using the Hangout feature in the new year! https://plus.google.com/b/106042054698715164922/

I HEART TEXAS.

This year I attended SXSW in Austin, TX. The music, film and interactive festival was a very cool experience for networking, learning, and film reviewing. I along with @debuggirl wrote quite a bit of coverage for our friends at http://HeyUGuys.co.uk

I also made a second trip to Texas for Thanksgiving in November. The Lone Star state is definitely growing on me.

PAX PRIME

This year at PAX Prime 2011, was a little different. Though I didn't spend the entire weekend in the convention, I spent a bunch of time hanging out with Virtua Fighter 5 Final Showdown inside of Gameworks. I'm looking forward to this game in the summer of 2012. I really enjoyed the arcade atmosphere, and hanging out with fellow VF fanatics.

GAMING

ARKHAM CITY, DEUS EX HR, BATTLEFIELD 3 and SWTOR. Nuff said.

KINECT

I just purchased a KINECT shortly after xmas, and I must say it has proven to be a great way to get young members and grownups in my family active, without having to worry about recharging wireless remotes, and dealing with the hassle of floor pad controllers like a wii balance boards. The house Wii will definitely be collecting dust looking into the new year.

iPAD

I won an iPad at work during a raffle. I beat out over 300 people. I guess I'm pretty lucky! We'll see how 2012 plays out! It's actually quite useful!

Hello new iPad! First time I ever won anything from #office r... on Twitpic

NEW FILMS

I have a new short film coming soon! TOP SECRET. For now!

So Long 2011, hello 2012.

WAVE

So I managed to score a Google Wave invite off, a generous Tweeter, about a week ago. Flash foward to today, and I finally got it in my email box. Of course I was excited to see what the hype was all about, and quickly put it to use, randomly contacting those on my gmail contact list, who also have Google Wave accounts.

I excitedly tweeted my new Wave status, and soon received, replies from desperate folks looking for a Google Wave invite. I'd love to invite some peeps, but to be honest, I don't think I have the ability to send out invites yet. I've been told it takes a week or so, for that to kick in.

So far, it takes some getting used to, knowing that what you type in the Wave - typos and all - can be seen by all participants. The interface is pretty standard, and comes off more like a chat room, than anything else, where you can have long threads of conversation, on any part of theh conversation. Though things are quite buggy in this Google Wave Preview. The scrolling, and scroll bars, for one are less than smooth.

1UP user NakedBob, joined the Wave, and started showing me some Wave extentions, that add apps to to the thread. Like games, polls, and google maps.

I can see some practical uses for Google Wave, but I don't think it's something for casual conversation, where you could just use IM instead. Google Wave seems good, for lots of collaborative stuff where the exchange of work-related info is necessary. Organizing events, and trips, seems like good use too.

And then there is the question of privacy. When NakedBob posted a google map of my location in the chat thread, I was surprised, that it was pretty accurate. Cool, but pretty stalkerish, if in the wrong hands.

Still, I can't wait to see Google Wave, when all the bugs are fixed.
